Yoruba Shango Shrine Sculpture

This female shrine sculpture from the Yoruba people of Nigeria is dedicated to Shango (Sango), the god of thunder. The distinctive double-faced ax headdress is a symbol of devotees of Shango. The more abstract and angular carving style of this particular sculpture makes it distinct among other shrine figures. 20th Century
