Ceremonial Dan Mask

The Dan people of Liberia and Ivory Coast are known for their extraordinary mask carving. Each mask is empowered with strong spirits, known as Gle. In order for the Gle to enter the physical world, they must have a mask carved reflecting their personality, which is then worn with further regalia in a masquerade.
