This soapstone mask from the Dan people of Ivory Coast and Liberia was used in coming-of-age Poro Society ceremonies. The Poro Society is an all-male secret society that served as a governing body in the community and led initiation ceremonies for the boys to become men. This mask also features a snake coiled on the head, possibly as Mami Wata symbolism.
